The Red Zone

It’s no coincidence that the most crucial zone to success in football is referred to as the RED ZONE. For red refers to the heart.

The fighting is fierce in this zone and championships are won or lost based on a team’s Red Zone success. It is just as true in the Spirit realm. If God’s truth does not make it through our red zone (the distance between our head and heart) to our hearts- we will never experience the abundant life Jesus promised us. The more truth has victory in our red zone- the more we will experience Heaven on Earth- the abundant life Jesus promises.

John 10:10

10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

Have you allowed Satan and his lies to sack Gods truth from healing your heart and bringing you fully alive? How is your red zone offense and defense? Are you diligently pushing the truth through Satan’s defenses into your heart? You must realize that the battle for your heart is fierce and the intensity is great. Just as football becomes increasingly violent in the red zone, so it is true when it comes to your heart.

Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life. – Proverbs 4:23

Jesus said,

“And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” – John 8:32

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” -John 16:33

BUT, TAKE HEART!

Fight The Fight, Jonathan

PS. The following from Streams In The Desert ties in perfectly.

March 3

“And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him.” (Mark 9:26.)

EVIL never surrenders its hold without a sore fight. We never pass into any spiritual inheritance through the delightful exercises of a picnic, but always through the grim contentions of the battle field. It is so in the secret realm of the soul. Every faculty which wins its spiritual freedom does so at the price of blood. Apollyon is not put to flight by a courteous request; he straddles across the full breadth of the way, and our progress has to be registered in blood and tears. This we must remember or we shall add to all the other burdens of life the gall of misinterpretation. We are not “born again” into soft and protected nurseries, but in the open country where we suck strength from the very terror of the tempest. “We must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.” — Dr. J.H.Jowett.

“Faith of our Fathers! living still, In spite of dungeon, fire and sword: O how our hearts beat high with joy Whene’er we hear that glorious word. Faith of our Fathers! Holy Faith! We will be true to Thee till death!

“Our fathers, chained in prisons dark, Were still in heart and conscience free; How sweet would be their children’s fate, If they, like them, could die for Thee!”

A Love So Strong

It is a love so strong and pure that leads us into the “Valley Of The Shadow Of Death” – Ps 23

This love is on display when the Spirit leads Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted by Satan- Luke 4.

Mind you, He has just received the Indwelling of the Holy Spirit and heard His Father say “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.”- Luke 3

It would be so easy for us to misunderstand this moment. To think “what kind of father sends his beloved son into the wild to fast and have an appointment with the devil?”

My answer- a Great and Loving Father! He has prepared Jesus for this. The training wheels are off and it’s time to ride! Note- the Father does not abandon Jesus but leads Him. He goes before Him! He paves the way but let’s Jesus put into practice what He has learned. This is love folks! Jesus doesn’t need some coddling, doting mother but a strong and loving father who leads him into battle.

Jesus could have been baffled by this dramatic change of scenery. One minute he is feeling the weight of his fathers love and affection and the next he is weak and under great temptation. But he doesn’t miss a beat, he passes the test with flying colors!

It’s good to notice that we will never know that we have what it takes and that his word is true until we are at our weakest but still rise to victory. We become “more than conquerors”-
Rom 8:37
“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”

Notice the last part of the verse. It is key! “Through him who loved us”. It is a strong unwavering love who leads us into many trials, dangers and snares.

It is his amazing love that leads and his amazing grace that sees us through.

Amazing Grace- by John Newton

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.

’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed!

Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
’Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promised good to me,
His Word my hope secures;
He will my Shield and Portion be,
As long as life endures.

Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess, within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.

The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;
But God, who called me here below,
Will be forever mine.

When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we’d first begun.

Remember what Jesus said-
John 16:33

“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

I would be remiss if I failed to mention the most extreme example of this Love So Strong-

Isaiah 53:7

He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth.

Take Heart my friend your victory in Jesus is secure. Blessings, Jonathan

The following Streams In The Desert ties in great!

February 1

“This thing is from me.” (1 Kings 12:24.)

“Life’s disappointments are veiled
love’s appointments.” — Rev. C. A. Fox.

My child, I have a message for you today; let me whisper it in your ear, that it may gild with glory any storm clouds which may arise, and smooth the rough places upon which you may have to tread. It is short, only five words, but let them sink into your inmost soul; use them as a pillow upon which to rest your weary head. This thing is from ME.

Have you ever thought of it, that all that concerns you concerns Me too? For, “he that toucheth you, toucheth the apple of mine eye” (Zech. 2:8). You are very precious in My sight. (Isa. 43:4), Therefore, it is My special delight to educate you.

I would have you learn when temptations assail you, and the “enemy comes in like a flood,” that this thing is from Me, that your weakness needs My might, and your safety lies in letting Me fight for you.

Are you in difficult circumstances, surrounded by people who do not understand you, who never consult your taste, who put you in the background? This thing is from Me. I am the God of circumstances. Thou camest not to thy place by accident, it is the very place God meant for thee.

Have you not asked to be made humble? See then, I have placed you in the very school where this lesson is taught; your surroundings and companions are only working out My will.

Are you in money difficulties? Is it hard to make both ends meet? This thing is from Me, for I am your purse-bearer and would have you draw from and depend upon Me. My supplies are limitless (Phil. 4:19). I would have you prove my promises. Let it not be said of you, “In this thing ye did not believe the Lord your God” (Deut. 1″32).

Are you passing through a night of sorrow? This thing is from Me. I am the Man of Sorrows and acquainted with grief. I have let earthly comforters fail you, that by turning to Me you may obtain everlasting consolation (2 Thess. 2:16, 17). Have you longed to do some great work for Me and instead have been laid aside on a bed of pain and weakness? This thing is from Me. I could not get your attention in your busy days and I want to teach you some of my deepest lessons. “They also serve who only stand and wait.” Some of My greatest workers are those shut out from active service, that they may learn to wield the weapon of all-prayer.

This day I place in your hand this pot of holy oil. Make use of it free, my child. Let every circumstance that arises, every word that pains you, every interruption that would make you impatient, every revelation of your weakness be anointed with it. The sting will go as you learn to see Me in all things. — Laura A. Barter Snow.

“’This is from Me,’ the Saviour said, As bending low He kissed my brow, ‘For One who loves you thus has led. Just rest in Me, be patient now, Your Father knows you have need of this, Tho’, why perchance you cannot see.— Grieve not for things you’ve seemed to miss. The thing I send is best for thee.’ “Then, looking through my tears, I plead, ‘Dear Lord, forgive, I did not know, ‘Twill not be hard since Thou dost tread, Each path before me here below. And for my good this thing must be, His grace sufficient for each test. So still I’ll sing, “Whatever be God’s way for me is always best.”’”

This is a fitting subject for 8/28/2013.
Romans 8:28
28 And we know that God causes everything to work together[a] for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.
Call me weird but I have been looking forward to this day for a while.  I think it wise to walk the path of suffering in increments.  Use whatever works for you- Numbers, dates etc.  Living life in short spans of time is crucial when encountering all sorts of testing.  Uphill battles must be fought wisely.  Searching for the end when none is in sight will tempt you to lose heart and hope.  The saying -” Rome wasn’t built in a day” comes to mind when facing large challenges.
During my current season of suffering I coined the saying, ” Soul Talk”.  Now, the act of talking to oneself is not new to mankind-  I just gave it a name that works for me.   I am, out of utter necessity, trying to follow in the footsteps of one of my hero’s, David- the young man who would be king.  He is famous for many things but the one I love the most is his record of choosing to tell himself the truth no matter what he faced.  Sure, he aired his complaints but he always ended with… But I trust you Lord or I will rejoice in The Lord and give thanks.
I can’t tell you how vital this is to gaining all the riches that are meant to be yours through the trial you face. Yes. You heard me right!  If you will choose to look at your current Suffering through the light of Romans 8:28. You will overcome and win the victors spoils.
Today’s Streams in the Desert fits perfectly!
 Sorrowful, Yet Rejoicing
“As sorrowful, yet always rejoicing” (2 Cor. 6:10).
The stoic scorns to shed a tear; the Christian is not forbidden to weep. The soul may be dumb with excessive grief, as the shearer’s scissors pass over the quivering flesh; or, when the heart is on the point of breaking beneath the meeting surges of trial, the sufferer may seek relief by crying out with a loud voice. But there is something even better.
They say that springs of sweet fresh water well up amid the brine of salt seas; that the fairest Alpine flowers bloom in the wildest and most rugged mountain passes; that the noblest psalms were the outcome of the profoundest agony of soul.
Be it so. And thus amid manifold trials, souls which love God will find reasons for bounding, leaping joy. Though deep call to deep, yet the Lord’s song will be heard in silver cadence through the night. And it is possible in the darkest hour that ever swept a human life to bless the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Have you learned this lesson yet? Not simply to endure God’s will, nor only to choose it; but to rejoice in it with joy unspeakable and full of glory. –Tried as by Fire
***
I will be still, my bruised heart faintly murmured,
As o’er me rolled a crushing load of woe;
The cry, the call, e’en the low moan was stifled;
I pressed my lips; I barred the tear drop’s flow.
I will be still, although I cannot see it,
The love that bares a soul and fans pain’s fire;
That takes away the last sweet drop of solace,
Breaks the lone harp string, hides Thy precious lyre.
But God is love, so I will bide me, bide me–
We’ll doubt not, Soul, we will be very still;
We’ll wait till after while, when He shall lift us
Yes, after while, when it shall be His will.
And I did listen to my heart’s brave promise;
And I did quiver, struggling to be still;
And I did lift my tearless eyes to Heaven,
Repeating ever, “Yea, Christ, have Thy will.”
But soon my heart upspake from ‘neath our burden,
Reproved my tight-drawn lips, my visage sad:
“We can do more than this, O Soul,” it whispered.
“We can be more than still, we can be glad!”
And now my heart and I are sweetly singing–
Singing without the sound of tuneful strings;
Drinking abundant waters in the desert,
Crushed, and yet soaring as on eagle’s wings.

Sorrowful yet rejoicing- Jonathan
jcannon on August 20th, 2013
I awoke in the middle of the night thinking about suffering. Then the saying  “Sufferin Succotash ” jumped in my brain.  I googled it and was reminded that Sylvester the cat of Looney Tunes made the saying famous.
As a youth I grew up loving Looney Tunes and despising succotash.  My Dad thought that feeding his kids liver and succotash was a good thing to do.   Maybe so, but I beg to differ!
Eating both are right up there with suffering in my book- at least the book of a young boy.
But life has a way of refining our perspectives and, since Jesus is The Lord of Life, He allows suffering to refine us and make us Holy if we will see all things through the faith and truth filter.  Otherwise, we will buy into the lies of the evil one who will be right there in the midst of our pain tempting us to distrust God, causing us to doubt His love, goodness and greatness.   Tempting us to throw him out of our lives with the bath water of suffering!
 Now, I must admit that prior to March 11, 2012 I did not know what real suffering was all about.   Since then, God in His wisdom, power and love has purposed me to go deep into the well of suffering for my good/holiness and His glory.
As I lay in bed pondering this season of spiritual refining my thoughts were drawn to the story of Joseph which reminded me of the Streams in the Desert devotional that talks about the iron of suffering which went into Joseph’s soul and prepared him to fulfill the vision The Lord gave him many years earlier.
I did a google search to find the devotional- when I saw the date and title my jaw dropped!
Free Through Suffering
“Thou hast enlarged me when I was in distress” (Ps. 4:1).
This is one of the grandest testimonies ever given by man to the moral government of God. It is not a man’s thanksgiving that he has been set free from suffering. It is a thanksgiving that he has been set free through suffering: “Thou hast enlarged me when I was in distress.” He declares the sorrows of life to have been themselves the source of life’s enlargement. And have not you and I a thousand times felt this to be true? It is written of Joseph in the dungeon that “the iron entered into his soul.” We all feel that what Joseph needed for his soul was just the iron. He had seen only the glitter of the gold. He had been rejoicing in youthful dreams; and dreaming hardens the heart. He who sheds tears over a romance will not be most apt to help reality; real sorrow will be too unpoetic for him. We need the iron to enlarge our nature. The gold is but a vision; the iron is an experience. The chain which unites me to humanity must be an iron chain. That touch of nature which makes the world akin is not joy, but sorrow; gold is partial, but iron is universal. My soul, if thou wouldst be enlarged into human sympathy, thou must be narrowed into limits of human suffering. Joseph’s dungeon is the road to Joseph’s throne. Thou canst not lift the iron load of thy brother if the iron hath not entered into thee. It is thy limit that is thine enlargement. It is the shadows of thy life that are the real fulfillment of thy dreams of glory. Murmur not at the shadows; they are better revelations than thy dreams. Say not that the shades of the prison-house have fettered thee; thy fetters are wings — wings of flight into the bosom of humanity. The door of thy prison-house is a door into the heart of the universe. God has enlarged thee by the binding of sorrow’s chain.
–George Matheson
                             *****
If Joseph had not been Egypt’s prisoner, he had never been Egypt’s governor. The iron chain about his feet ushered in the golden chain about his neck.
–Selected
So, if you find yourself in the midst of a severe trial of suffering, remember Joseph  and the following passage-
Romans 8:28-30
28 And we know that God causes everything to work together[a] for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. 29 For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn[b] among many brothers and sisters. 30 And having chosen them, he called them to come to him. And having called them, he gave them right standing with himself. And having given them right standing, he gave them his glory.
Remember, He has chosen you to become like His Son and has given you right standing through His suffering and death and – here’s the kicker!  He has promised to work ALL things together for your good and His purpose for you- to give you His Glory!
Peace, Jonathan

Psalm 100

5 For the Lord is good and his love endures forever;
    his faithfulness continues through all generations.
Romans 8
28 And we know that God causes everything to work together[a] for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.
The Spirit brought this idea to my mind in the wee hours of the morn.   He basically said this-  I am your steady support. You can count on me no matter what circumstance befalls you.   Your steady support or foundation is built on my word and these three truths therein.
1). I am Great/ Sovereign
2)  I am Good/ Loving
3). I Never Change
This is our Devine Safeguard against losing heart!
So, no matter what trial comes our way, if we will put this visual before our eyes and train ourselves to look at trials through Gods Goodness, Greatness and Unchangeability-  we will move forward with confidence, hope, peace, power and victory.
1 John 4
8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.
Psalm 62
11 Once God has spoken;
    twice have I heard this:
that power belongs to God,
12     and that to you, O Lord, belongs steadfast love.
Hebrews 13:8
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
James 1:17
Whatever is good and perfect comes down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow.
Remember this- the greatest gifts are often wrapped in darkness and rough exterior. Those who trust and wait will receive the greater blessing.
Peace be yours,  Jonathan
Psalm 27
14 Wait for the Lord;
    be strong and take heart
    and wait for the Lord.
O troubled soul, beneath the rod,
Thy Father speaks, be still, be still;
Learn to be silent unto God,
And let Him mould thee to His will.
O praying soul, be still, be still,
He cannot break His plighted Word;
Sink down into His blessed will,
And wait in patience on the Lord.
O waiting soul, be still, be strong,
And though He tarry, trust and wait;
Doubt not, He will not wait too long,
Fear not, He will not come too late.
